Government of Angola suspends construction of roads due to drop in oil prices

The construction of new roads and social facilities planned for this year in Angola has been suspended due to the financial crisis facing the country following the fall in oil revenues, Angola’s Minister for Construction said in Luanda.

In a meeting with national and foreign contractors to address the situation, Minister Waldemar Alexandre Pires said that the government had it had set projects funded by the private sector as priorities for 2015.

“Our priorities will focus specifically on projects financed with guaranteed resources,” the minister said, recalling that the President had warned in his New Year’s speech that some projects would be delayed.

The Construction Minister noted that construction projects for roads and social facilities, which he did not specifically name, were included in the restrictions.

In October last year, the Angolan Head of State announced that the fall in oil revenues from oil exports would lead to the postponement of the goal of building 63,000 classrooms, which had an initial target of three years.

Pires stressed that, in terms of priorities, social facilities were at the top of the list.
